Yu Tsai was born in Taiwan, and spent his childhood in Taipei. He moved to a farm in Indiana with his family when he was 12. He then moved to Chino, California, where Yu Tsai spent his teenage years. He went to Don Antonio Lugo High School, where he was a member of the Future Farmers of America and the track team. After high school, Yu Tsai went to the University of California, Riverside and California State Polytechnic University, Pomona, where he majored in biology and zoology with an intention of becoming a veterinarian.
He then attended the Art Center College of Design in Pasadena, California, studying painting and graphic design. It was during this time in his education that he discovered his passion for the arts, along with directing and photography as a means of telling a visual story. Yu Tsai’s photography has been featured in magazines such as vogue and he has shot celebrities such as Leonardo Dicaprio.
These images are of a man expressing numerous emotions from happy to joking to serious. This perpetuates the differs moods humans can experience throughout the day as a result of things that are happening .
Yu Tsai has used a shallow depth of field to capture the models tonal values on textures on his face and suit.
These images are of a woman portraying numerous emotions from angry to serious to happy.
In this image, Yu Tsai has used studio lighting to enhance the the model’s features and accentuate her tonal values. Looking at this image on a deeper level, when in colour only the model changes colour yet the background doesn’t which could represent how only you can change how you feel.

For this final piece, I am pleased with the outcome because I used Yu Tsai’s concept of different emotions throughout the day, but twisted it to things people, in this case my sister, does throughout the day.
This links with the theme of events because each image represents a minor event that occurs in my sisters day, such as waking up. These small things make up her day which is a greater event. When taking these images I tried taking them at different angles, but for some shots when I tried to take a more “aesthetic” shot, it didn’t match the theme as would often involve focusing on different subject matter other than my sister.
This shoot required some planning because my sister had to change clothes three times, and if I didn’t plan it out it would have taken a lot more time. To improve this concept, I would have liked to taken the image of my sister actually at a school desk because it would look more realistic, but I had to use a desk at home.
I am pleased with the composition I used with the shots because it makes them look more pleasing on the eye, as if they were awkwardly framed it wouldn’t look right. One decision I made thats different to Yu Tsai is that in his images, the models shots are all taken from the same angle, however to represent a childs day I chose to take them from different angles as it almost portrays the chaotic lifestyle children live.
For the enlarged image, I chose to leave it in colour because I think if it was in black and white the whole concept would look far too dull. I used a shallow depth of field in this image to capture the different tonal values in my sisters face.
